Knowledge work gets redefined, right here and now
Hey, my name is Vladislav Railes. I'm an 18 year-old student who is passionate about changing how people interact with information. I never expected to have an idea that would consume all my thoughts and have me completely captivated. As an avid learner, I'm always interested in finding new techniques to help me remember more, be more productive and find more joy in the things I do.
It all started with the Metaverse event put on by Meta back in November 2022. This is when I began to contemplate the future of our world. Being a huge fan of science fiction books by Zamyatin and Bradbury, I was struck by the idea to explore this topic in more depth. This is also when I got to the second stage of a major essay contest held by my dream university and I had the perfect idea to write about. I started to research and watch videos, read through articles and came to the realization that we often overlook the importance of being human. We try to digitalize everything around us, creating huge amounts of content and neglecting the idea of being honest with ourselves and focusing on consciousness and reality. Your avatar can't replace your true self. What's more, do we really need a world that is completely digital, like in the movie Ready Player One?
The digital world follows different rules than the physical world and it's easy to get lost in it. Can you imagine your own room changing every moment and second? That's the kind of speed at which the digital world operates.
I strongly believe that we should be more concerned with real-world problems and not escape to alternative universes full of entertainment just to forget our worries. Everyone deserves the chance to design their own life and have absolute freedom to make it happen. Instead of that, we are often focused on achieving success or money, or competing with others and increasing the speed of our lives.
We all live in the Information Age, where knowledge work is the most important. We have too many apps and ways of consuming and creating content, flooding the web and our minds. Have you ever felt overwhelmed by all the information? Have you ever found yourself constantly updating your Read Later list and never returning to things you saved to it? I understand you. I have the same problems.
We need to start looking for more meaningful ways to express ourselves and take more time to enjoy the real world. And all of this begins from redefining work with information around us. That's why I'm building Locus, an app which will be your personal space for contemplations, reflection on things that you read, listen to, see, find, experience, and an assistant in connecting the dots between scattered thoughts in your own mind and minds of billions of other people.
